For most of the country lawn-mowing season is upon us leaving many homeowners with the age-old question "which type of lawn mower is best for my yard?" This question comes about because there are so many different types of yards and so many different types of mowers. We will discuss different types of lawn mowers and what types of lawns each of them fit the best. Manual Reel Lawn Mowers Manual reel mowers are great for very small lawns that are flat and relatively smooth. If you have a small flat lawn this could be the best type of mower for you. Reel mowers are lightweight because they do not have an engine there are few moving parts so they last a long time without the need for many repairs and they are quiet.
If you have a small or regular sized yard (say up to 5000 square feet) then a regular electric mower is probably going to be suitable for your needs. If you have acreage or a large yard then a riding lawn mower or a cordless electric lawn mower with additional batteries might be a better option. If you opt for a corded mower you will be restricted by the length of the electric cord and the availability of power outlets around your yard. Unless you do have a small yard battery operated mowers are a much more flexible option as you dont have to worry about dragging along an electric cord while mowing.
Discharging grass clippings on to the lawn is often listed as a disadvantage to reel mowers. However we would disagree with this assessment as leaving the clippings on your lawn allows you to mulch your lawn at the same time as you mow. To mulch well clipping size needs to be small so again this works best if you mow your lawn regularly. If you dont or prefer to collect your clippings some models also have a grass catcher that comes with it or can be bought separately. Reel mowers are hard to push through tall grass. If your grass is extremely tall the first time you mow it you are going to have a hard time. From then on it will be easier but only if you mow regularly. If you prefer to only mow every few weeks then a reel mower will not likely work for you. All in all we think reel mowers are a great choice for many reasons but they arent for everyone. If you understand and are content with the basic limitations of reel lawn mowers then the next step is to read reviews and recommendations to find which is the best reel lawn mower for you. The environment and your heart will thank you.
Another bonus of electric mowers is that you will not need to store fuel for the engine which saves both storage space and money. Warranty Options Investigate the warranty options available - most electric mowers come with a two year limited manufacturers warranty and some will also offer a lifetime warranty on the mower deck. It is likely that any problems you might have with the mower will occur within the six months to a year so having a warranty that covers you beyond this initial period of use is a bonus. Finally price is often the determining factor when making any purchase. If you do have a set budget do your homework and always try to buy the best quality product you can afford as this is likely to save you money on maintenance and repairs in the long term.
